In 1865, William Booth, a Methodist pastor, and Catherine Booth, his wife, established the Salvation Army in East London, England, to provide evangelism and social action services. While living in a place plagued by poverty and hopelessness, the Booths' desire to spread the gospel began to take form. They moved fast to abandon the traditional practices of the church to meet the people where they worked and lived, which was on the streets. Their work with a social conscience was bold and inventive, going where significantly few churches were ready or able to go.
In March of 1880, Captain Emma Westbrook and George Scott Railton brought The Salvation Army to the United States through New York City. There were six female soldiers: Alice Coleman, Rachel Evans, Emma Elizabeth Florence Morris, Elizabeth Pearson, and Clara Price. Annie Shaw was also a member of the expedition.

Their programs are available from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, so parents with unpredictable work schedules may take advantage of them.
Children get two healthy meals, snacks, and educational activities daily. These activities might range from arts and crafts to music to outdoor play.
They welcome nearly 1,000 children aged 7 to 14 each summer at their 400-acre camp in New Jersey, a state that has served since 1923.
